First Week

May 26, 2009

9-4

Today is my first day interning with MWR (Morale Welfare Recreation). This is the beginning of my third and final internship, so I am no stranger to the internship process.

MWR is a government department that works with creating projects and managing the recreation facilities on military bases. I am working directly with the sport and recreation department of MWR, which is headed up by Mr. Steve Johnson. So, this department manages all the recreation facilities (gyms), intramurals, and also creates programs related to sports for the military and their families.

The first day here is like most first days at a new job. I was introduced to almost the entire staff and I probably don’t remember 90% of whom I met. I was also herded around the facilities, which took the entire day. The sport and recreation department over sees 11 recreation facilities as well as some fields and pools.

So, a quick run down of what I am going to be doing this summer: I will be spending a good deal of time in the office, I will also be helping out with special events, and I might spend some time working in some of the recreation facilities.

Day 2 of my internship. Today I was assigned to start working on race packets for the Army Birthday 10 mile run. The task was to write the names of the participants on envelopes that each participant will receive with information about the run. Once that was finished I had to assemble the new timing system clocks for the 10 mile race. This was a fairly simple task, but I was amazed at the different types of things that these timing systems can do.

Later in the afternoon a couple of the people in the office drove around to the different units along the race route and notify them that certain roads would be closed during the hours of 6-9. Doing this seemed to be much harder than I thought it would be because it is hard to find the unit headquarters and also find someone who knows the information we are requesting.

We didn’t finish the route so we will have to finish it some other day.

Well, today was a lot of busy work. The packets that I worked on yesterday for the 10 mile run needed to be stuffed. So, some of the other people in my office and I worked on putting the packets together. These packets contained information about the 10 mile race, race numbers, and also had flyers from the sponsors. This doesn’t seem like much of a task but this took us the entire day, and we stuffed and labled 800 packets. So, we accomplished a good majority of the work that needed to be done, but some packets still remain.

This morning we finished working on the race packets for the Army 10 mile run. After we finished the remaining packets there was a MWR staff meeting to brief staff on what their responsibilities were during the day of the 10 mile run. Other things were brought up in this meeting but none seemed to concern me.

After our staff meeting Heather, Cecelia and I finished driving the route of the 10 mile run, and finished contacting all troops stationed along the route. Once we finished this I was sent on some errands for one of the managers of the Fredrick Facility.

The errands I was running was for the Amazing race event that will be held on this Saturday. I will also be working this event. This concludes my day.
